Appeals Court Temporarily Halts Trump Fraud Judgment, Slashes Bond to $175 Million

March 25. 2024

A New York appeals court has temporarily suspended a substantial civil fraud judgment against former President Donald Trump for 10 days, reducing the required bond for a longer delay from $454 million to $175 million. This decision prevents New York Attorney General Letitia James from seizing Trump's assets to cover the judgment for now. Trump's lawyers had argued that securing a $454 million bond was "impossible" after contacting over 30 surety companies, suggesting a $100 million bond instead.

The judgment involves Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization, accused of submitting false financial data for better loan terms. The appeals court also paused a ruling preventing Trump from corporate roles in New York but allowed the continuation of a financial watchdog for the Trump Organization. Trump criticizes the case as politically motivated, while also dealing with a separate $91.6 million bond in a defamation case. Despite initial discussions, Chubb Insurance ultimately did not issue the bond for the fraud case, distancing itself from judgments on the case's merits.

Social Media Standstill: Meta Platforms Suffer Massive Outage

March 5th, 2024
Meta Platforms, which oversees Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, experienced a significant outage, rendering the platforms inaccessible to users. Users reported being unable to load the apps or websites, with some experiencing involuntary logouts from Facebook and complete non-functionality from Instagram.

Concerns among users arose amid the outage, fearing potential security breaches, but it was clarified that the error messages stemmed from issues with Facebook's login system rather than cyber attacks. Down Detector, a tracking website, detected widespread outages across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger on Thursday, indicating a potential global impact.

Meta maintains a status page for its business products, affirming their functionality despite the platform-wide issues. However, WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, remained operational during the outage.

Supreme Court Unanimously Upholds Trump's Presence on Colorado Ballot

March 4th, 2024

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that former President Donald J. Trump should remain on Colorado's primary ballot, rejecting a challenge to his eligibility for another term. The decision, while offering different reasons among the justices, emphasized legal issues and refrained from taking a stance on Trump's involvement in the Capitol insurrection.

All justices concurred that states cannot bar candidates for federal office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits insurrectionists from holding office. While four justices favored leaving the matter as is, a five-justice majority stated that Congress must enact legislation to enforce Section 3.

The ruling drew frustration from the court's liberal members, who criticized the majority's expansion beyond the case's scope. Justice Amy Coney Barrett also expressed reservations about the majority's approach but emphasized the importance of unanimity amidst differences.

This decision marks a significant ruling regarding a presidential election since Bush v. Gore in 2000. The case, initiated by six Colorado voters, challenged Trump's eligibility based on the 14th Amendment's Section 3.

Aside from this case, the Supreme Court is deliberating Trump's immunity from prosecution for his role in the January 6 Capitol attack and the extent of charges against him in a federal election interference case, with a ruling expected by June.
